Stress Relief Tips from a Military Spouse and Special Needs Parent
Stress Management is important |
We all have stress...
Yes, we all do. We can all have stress with work, with your home, your relationship, your children, friends, money, etc. My stress stems from caring for two boys: a 17 month old special needs and a 5 year old. My husband being away for majority of the year. Starting our PPM (moving ourselves) for our PCS move -- we are relocating to North Carolina. Purging most of our stuff for the move, scrubbing, and cleaning for our move out of our rental home. Waiting to hear if we got the house we put an offer on. I am a full-time student online at Ultimate Medical Academy for Medical Billing and Coding. As you can see there is A LOT this mom is stressing about. How do you do it? How do you cope? Don't get me wrong there are days that I just want to crawl under a blanket and do nothing -- but I can't. I have two little humans depending on me and my husband depending on me to make our PCS as smooth as possible. I wanted to write about some of the ways I deal with stress on a day to day basis.
Blogging:
Blogging is therapeutic |
Blogging in itself can be stressful with all of the technology, templates, domains, and followers but I find it super relaxing. I started blogging back in June to help raise awareness about Jaxson and his rare condition, DYRK1A. There isn't a whole lot of information about it because it's so new in the genetic world. I wanted to write about our journey in hopes to reach someone who is going through the same struggles as us. Even if it helps only one person, that's enough for me. I also wanted to blog about Jaxson and our family to help raise awareness on Rare Chromosome Disorders. It is important to raise awareness in hopes to get the funding and care they all need.

Exercise:
Family stroll -- Jaxson is napping |
I know what you're thinking. Exercise? Really? You're already stressed out and crunched for time, how could you possibly fit it in? Prior to having children I use to work out about 1.5 to 2 hours a day for maybe 5 to 6 days a week. Now I'm lucky to get that 30-45 minutes for a work out so I began doing Crossfit type workouts, or WODs, stretching/yoga, and/or walking.. ANYTHING to get 30 minutes of extracurricular activity in. After I exercise I always feel energized and ready to go, but when I didn't work out for a few days I can definitely feel it. I felt tired all the time, moody, and stressed out.
According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America, "Scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. Even five minutes of aerobic exercise can stimulate anti-anxiety effects (Physical Activity Reduces Stress, 2018)."
Or like Elle Woods says...
So tighten up them sneakers and get out there!
Respite Care:
Daycare or Respite Care is fantastic! |
I've been fortunate enough to qualify for Respite Care because of Jaxson's EFMP level of need through the USMC. I qualify for 20 hours of Respite Care a month and I'm so thankful for that. It has helped me catch up on my reading for school work and to allow some "me time" as well. Even if you don't qualify for Respite Care, talk to a friend or family member and see if they can give you some assistance for a couple hours. It is important to have you time.
Support Groups:
Support is important |
I was fortunate enough to find a support page for Jaxson's rare diagnosis the first day we got the call. It was great knowing we weren't alone with this journey, and we have our own small tribe of friends and family in our corner. They helped with questions our geneticist couldn't answer and gave us an idea of where and how Jaxson will be from years to come.

There are support pages for military spouses on Facebook as well, if you have questions regarding a PCS move, daycare questions, jobs, anything and everything they're there to help in anyway they can!
What I'm trying to say to fellow military spouses and special needs parents, take care of yourself. Go out there and run, go grab a coffee with a friend, talk to a specialist, DO SOMETHING! You can't except to take care of your littles if you're too stressed out.

We all seem to have too much stress in our lives nowadays... exercise and photography are my stress relievers!
I've often used hourly care on post for a little me time. I used to feel guilty about it, but it was the only time I could recharge and accomplish things that freed my brain space for when the kids are around.
Thank you for sharing. There's nothing to feel guilty about! <3 We all need that little 'me' time! I'm glad there is drop in/hourly care for you on base -- we have the same here as well :) It is definitely a godsend for us military families
Thank you Kate. I haven't tried photography but would love to give it a try. It's amazing how some are able to capture beautiful photos <3
You are such a wonderful momma! So many things going on and you still find ways to get time for yourself. I agree that my blogging is a way to lower stress as well as exercise. My oldest starts kindergarten this year and my youngest his second year of preschool. Even those few hours per week with them both out is so refreshing.
I love to exercise to de-stress. I also clean when I need a stress reliever, which is a win-win.
Your post was exactly what I needed to read. This month is very stressful for my whole family and I definitely need some technique to relieve the stress.
Thank you so much for saying that Stephanie! <3 My oldest starts Kindergarten on the 13th and I'm so excited for that. I love him to death but I do need a small break. I'll probably try to utilize my respite care while he's in school to get a couple hours break from Jaxson as well. When was your oldest born? JJ turns 5 on the 6th!
Lol, I wish I had the urge to clean when I'm stressed!! My house would be a whole lot more cleaner
Thank you for sharing that with me Marjorie -- I hope that some of these tips continue to help! :) I wish you and your family the best with whatever is going on <3
I love to exercise to help relieve stress. Unfortunately I'm unable to workout right now so I've been focusing on blogging to help relieve my stress. Writing is so therapeutic! Also cuddling with my doggo. That's always an excellent stress reliever.
For me, it’s all about discipline and meditation. That’s how I handle with stress. I also channel it to other positive outlets such as sports and arts.
Absolutely on point about support groups. They are a wonderful way to meet people experiencing the same things and therefore understand you.
Exercise is definitely an effective way to reduce stress! I also love coloring with my 1st grader...it's surprisingly relaxing!
Great resources! Thanks for putting this list together.
Exercise is always my way of relieving stress. Cleaning also helps too.
Sometimes it is so hard to destress! Thanks for the useful tips! I need those today!!
Too much stress is so bad, and I know I am bad about letting mine get to me. I need to relax more and try to get rid of a lot of the stress.

You can do it Jessi, take care of yourself! <3 Read a great book or take a quick walk around the neighborhood ;)
You're very welcome Lasha <3
I wish cleaning would relax me haha, my house would be a lot cleaner if I did!
Thank you Julie!

Meditation is definitely a great tip too!
I love coloring as well! <3 I have bought some of those adult coloring books

Bottling up stress can be quite unhealthy. These are some great ideas to de-stress, you just have to find the one that works best for you.
Blogging and exercise got me through some very stressful years of my life. I was going to college, working, and raising three children (1 just a baby). I made sure to dedicate time to writing my blog each morning, and exercising each evening and it kept me totally level headed. It's so important to designate time for ourselves, especially when we take so much time to take care of others. :)
I really love your legally blonde quote....this movie never gets old. Great blog post btw :)
Yes it definitely is Maysz! <3
Haha! Blogging can be a little stressful, I agree. Trying to network and all that good stuff can be difficult :)
Hey, 30 minutes a day is okay! If that's all you have time for try some high intensity workouts ;)
Thanks for sharing these tips. I, myself, is suffering now from flu. I just asked my friend to give me a massage therapy. She said I am so stressful. She can feel by the points as per her. Glad to have a caring friend.
Thank you Princess Quinn and I'm sorry to hear you're sick! I hope you feel better soon. I have a friend who is a massage therapist as well and she always tells me I'm so tight and stressed.
Thank you Kelly! I LOVE that movie haha. One of my favorites.
Thank you Ada :)
Thank you Angela, it is quite unhealthy to bottle everything in. Hope everyone learns to take time for themselves <3
Thank you Joanna! Wow, you're one amazing momma! What did you go to college for? :)
These are great tips, I have a friend who is a military spouse and her husband and her are going through a lot now and I do think this would be great for her. Gonna send this her way! :)
So much yes to this! We have GOT to make sure we are taking the time to heal emotionally and relieve some of the stress we face these days. I do workouts 6 days a week and I try to get to the spa every month. I also delegate the things for my work that I can't get done, as well as housework so I can focus on my children! It helps keep my sanity intact.
I've been thinking of getting up an hour earlier to exercise. I think I can do it. We'll see. It's stresses me not to be exercising, something I quit doing when school ended.
Wow, you certainly do have a lot to stress about, but it's great that you've found ways to help you cope! I also find blogging very therapeutic; it has honestly changed me into a completely different, happier person.
What a wonderful message. Blogging can be stressful once you start weighing the technical sides, etc. but there's a different kind of happiness when you hit publish on a post. Thank you for these gentle reminders!
What an interesting post! I used to not believe that exercising has stress-relieving benefits until I actually tried it,for stress, and I was and still am amazed at how 45 minutes on the treadmill could relax me more than a 45 minute nap! Thanks for sharing. :)
Stress is my biggest challenge though since I became my own boss, it's definitely decreased.
Exercise and photography are two outlets for me when I’m stressed. Also a long hot shower helps!
These are all such great tips and so very important!
I like you have writing as one of the ways I help to deal with stress. It is so therapeutic.
Thank you Andrea -- I hope she enjoys read it as much as I enjoy writing!
Yes Lauren, YES! We do! Are you excited about school starting? I am, it may make me sound like a terrible mother but that small break during the day definitely helps. <3 I won't have to worry about big brother waking up Jaxson during nap time!
Hello Rosey! Getting up earlier is definitely helpful! I use to go to the gym around 5:30-6 am before work to ensure that I had time to eat and get ready. <3
Thank you Indya, it definitely helps blogging! I feel a lot less stressed ;)
Thank you Stephanie. I agree, blogging can be a bit stressful once you get into the technical sides of things. I'm going to be buying a domain, host, and have to import/re-direct a bunch of things at the end of the year but I'm excited!
How are you dealing with stress since you became your own boss? :)
Thank you Christina!
Oh a hot shower! I miss baths haha!
Thank you for stopping by! Keep it up girl!
Great recommendations. Exercising is the one that works the best for me, a simple outdoors walk can improve my mood drastically. Thanks for the reminder also, I'll go out for a walk today ;)
I have a 10 month old and I am 19 weeks pregnant... it has been a hectic month around her and this post is soo helpful for me to relieve stress 😊👍🏼
